Quick answer
Weekends and New Zealand public holidays don't stop you applying, but they pause settlement, because banks, lawyers and land registration need to be operating. A complete application made early on the business day before a holiday has the best chance of funding before the break. Plan around dates like Matariki (Friday 10 July 2026), Labour Day and the Christmas–New Year period.
Key points
- You can apply any time; settlement needs business days.
- Long weekends and the Christmas break are the biggest gaps.
- Regional anniversary days can affect local lawyers and valuers.
- Apply early on the last business day before a break.
- Matariki 2026
- Friday 10 July
- Labour Day 2026
- Monday 26 October
- Christmas 2026
- Friday 25 December
- Matariki 2027
- Friday 25 June
Urgent funding needs don’t respect the calendar. Wages fall due the day after a long weekend; a settlement lands just before Christmas; a machine breaks on Matariki eve. You can apply whenever you like — but the final steps of funding depend on business days. Knowing which days are affected lets you plan around them.
Why do weekends and holidays affect funding?
Applying and assessing can happen quickly, but settlement relies on:
- Banks processing payments.
- Lawyers advising and witnessing documents for property loans.
- Land registration of mortgages and caveats.
- Valuers inspecting properties when needed.
When those parties aren’t working, the last steps wait. Our aim — funded within 24 hours of your first application — counts in practical terms, so an application made on a Friday evening will usually settle on Monday or Tuesday.

Regional anniversary days also apply — Auckland Anniversary was Monday 26 January in 2026 and falls on Monday 1 February in 2027. Check Employment New Zealand for your region.
How do I plan an application around a holiday?
- Count back business days from your deadline, skipping weekends and holidays.
- Apply early on the last business day before a break — ideally in the morning.
- Have every document ready before you apply. There’s no time for a second request.
- Brief your lawyer if property is involved, and confirm they’re working that day.
- Choose the fastest product. Unsecured deals have fewer parties to wait on.
Facing a deadline after a long weekend? Apply now rather than after the break, so the deal is ready to settle the moment business resumes.
Which periods are hardest?
- Christmas to mid-January. Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year and the day after, plus many professional firms closing for longer. It’s also when GST for November periods falls due (15 January) and holiday pay peaks.
- Easter. Good Friday and Easter Monday make a four-day weekend.
- Anzac Day, Waitangi Day and Christmas falling on weekends — check whether the holiday is Mondayised for your business.
- Regional anniversaries — a lawyer in Auckland or Wellington may be closed when you’re not.
An illustrative holiday plan
A Rotorua tourism operator needs $60,000 before Matariki weekend 2026 to pay seasonal staff and a supplier. Matariki is Friday 10 July. The owner applies first thing on Wednesday 8 July with statements and ID ready. The unsecured loan is approved Wednesday afternoon and funded Thursday morning, before the long weekend. Applying on Thursday afternoon would probably have meant funding on Monday 13 July. (Illustrative only.)
How does this fit with tax dates?
Some IRD dates sit right next to holidays — 15 January for November-period GST and provisional tax instalments, and 7 May for March-period GST. If funding is for a tax bill, count back carefully. Our 2026–27 tax calendar lists the main dates.
What is Mondayisation, and why does it matter?
When certain public holidays fall on a weekend, the holiday is transferred to the following Monday (or Tuesday) for employees who wouldn’t otherwise work that weekend day. Employment New Zealand’s list shows both dates where this applies — for example, Boxing Day 2026 falls on a Saturday, with Monday 28 December the Mondayised day.
For funding, Mondayised holidays matter because many banks, law firms and professional offices treat them as non-working days. A deadline that looks like it has a full business day before it may not. Always count working days from the official list, and confirm with your lawyer which days they’re open.
Do tax due dates move around holidays?
Yes. Inland Revenue says that when a due date falls on a weekend or public holiday, payment must be received on or before the next working day. That helps, but it also means several deadlines can bunch up straight after a long weekend — just when cash is often tight.
Can unsecured funding still land before a long weekend?
Often, if you’re quick. Unsecured loans don’t need a lawyer, a valuer or land registration, so applying early on the last business day before a break gives the best chance of funds arriving before it starts. Property-secured loans have more parties involved, so allow an extra day.
Beat the break — apply early
If a deadline is coming up around a weekend or public holiday, the best thing you can do is start now. Apply in about 60 seconds — your enquiry won’t involve a credit check, it stays with a single specialist rather than being shared with other lenders, and a real person will plan the timing around the calendar with you. Please put your deadline in the form so we can work back from it accurately.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply on a weekend?
Yes. Applications are received around the clock and picked up from the start of the next business day, so your deal is first in line.
Will my funds arrive on a public holiday?
Usually not. Bank payment systems, lawyers and land registration processes generally operate on business days, so funds normally arrive the next business day.
Do regional anniversary days matter?
They can. A lawyer or valuer in a region on its anniversary day may be closed, even if the rest of the country is working.
How should I plan around Christmas?
Apply well before the break if you can. Many businesses face wages, holiday pay and GST pressures in December and January, and professional firms often close for part of that period.
